EMLYN

“Put me down,” I tell Nate. “I can walk.”

“Like hell. You’re still bleeding.”

“I’m fine. It’s really not that bad.”

“Shut up, Em,” he says. “I know what you’re doing. You want to prove you can walk this off because you can see that Milo’s upset about not being able to heal you.”

“Is that so bad?”

“Of course not, but I’m not going to let you make your leg even worse because you want to protect his feelings,” Nate says. “And he wouldn’t want you to do that either.”

The truth is, I’m pretty dizzy. I don’t actually think I could walk on my own, and if I tried, my legs might give out. So I lean into Nate’s shoulder and let him carry me without any further protesting.

“Here,” Steele calls, up ahead of us. “This is the cave I saw.”

We catch up to him. The mouth of the cave is narrow, but it’s high—even Wilder, the tallest of us, doesn’t need to stoop to get in. Once we’re inside, we find that the ceiling is even higher than the mouth would suggest and sort of cavernous, domed above us. The place is airy, and even though it’s dim, it gets enough light that I’m not uncomfortable here. It’s dry, and it’s out of the way of the elements.

“This is good,” Wilder says. “We can stay here for a few days while Emlyn gets back into fighting shape.”

Milo looks wretched. “I don’t know why I wasn’t able to heal her.”

“It’s probably what Steele said,” I say, reaching out a hand for him, but he doesn’t come to my side. Maybe he just doesn’t see. I withdraw my hand but keep talking. “It’s just like you missed a step going down. It could have happened to any one of us. It did happen to Wilder.”

“It hasn’t happened to you,” Milo says, and he gives me a significant look.

I look away. This isn’t about blood magic. We’re not going to make this about blood magic. He doesn’t even know that I used blood to create that little windstorm when we fought the Ravagers.

As far as he knows, I’ve just gotten lucky with my magic.

Maybe I have.

Or maybe it’s like the way I took to elemental magic. Maybe I’m just naturally good at adapting to changes in the moon. I don’t know why I would be, but it’s possible.

Nate sets me on the ground. “We should get a fire started,” he says. “We’re going to need to boil water so we can clean and bandage that wound.”

“I’ll get the tinder,” Steele says. He jumps to his feet.

“No,” Milo says. “You stay here. I’ll go.” He’s out the mouth of the cave before anyone can protest.”

Steele stares after him for a moment. “He still doesn’t trust me, does he?”

“I’m not sure it’s about you,” I say.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Wilder says. “I’d say it’s a little bit about him. Not that you should worry about it too much,” he adds for Steele’s benefit. “It’s going to take us all a while to get used to the idea of living with a Moon Drinker.
